Birding Adventures in Kiskunság National Park: October 22–24

This October, we embarked on a three-day birding tour in the breathtaking landscapes of the Kiskunság National Park. Blessed with sunny skies throughout, the perfect weather added a touch of magic to our adventure, during which we observed an impressive total of 100 bird species.

Day 1: Tiszaalpár and Pusztaszer Landscape Protection Area

Our journey began on October 22 with a morning excursion around Tiszaalpár. The area's diverse habitats did not disappoint, and we were thrilled to spot several fascinating species, including:

  • Black Woodpecker
  • Great Grey Shrike
  • Middle Spotted Woodpecker
  • Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
  • Short-toed Treecreeper
  • Saker Falcon

In the afternoon, we visited the Pusztaszer Nature Reserved area, where the highlight was a Eastern Imperial Eagle. We also enjoyed observing numerous waders at the saline lake of Vesszős-szék, a hotspot for shorebird activity.

Day 2: Apaj – The Land of the Bustard

On October 23, we turned our attention to the plains around Apaj, a region famous for its Great Bustards. Our main target was this magnificent bird, and to our delight, we saw multiple individuals strutting confidently across the steppe.

This area also brought another treat: several sightings of Eastern Imperial Eagle, a majestic and powerful bird of prey.

Day 3: Wetlands of Csongrád

The final day, October 24, was spent exploring the wetlands of Csongrád. This region's aquatic habitats hosted a variety of waterbirds, and among the more notable species we encountered were:

  • Bearded Reedling
  • Penduline Tit
  • Avocet

However, the relatively warm weather seemed to have impacted goose movements across the country. Unfortunately, we missed the iconic Red-breasted Goose and Lesser White-fronted Goose during this tour.

Reflections

Despite the slight disappointment regarding geese, this trip was a remarkable success. From iconic raptors to elusive songbirds and elegant waders, the diversity of species kept our spirits high. Spending these sunny autumn days immersed in nature was a true privilege, and Kiskunság National Park once again proved itself as a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

If you're planning your next birding adventure, make sure to add this incredible region to your list—you won't be disappointed!
