Spring birding tour in Hungary

May is a particularly wonderful time for birdwatching in Hungary. At this time of the year, you have the opportunity to see all the Hungarian birds on your list. There is so much going on during the spring, the males have their beautiful plumage on to attract mates. The breeding season is in focus so you will see the birds in their most vibrant states. On these outstanding five days, we are going to visit two national parks and explore the best birding hotspots and habitats in the country.

Itinerary

1. Day: Monday
On the first day, I pick you up at
the airport. After about one hour's drive, we occupy the accommodation around
Kecskemét in the Kiskunsági National Park.
If the time allows us to do so, we have
a look around Tiszaalpár, which is a great wetland habitat close to the accommodation.
2. Day: Tuesday
On the second day, after the
breakfast we visit the Southern part of the Kiskunság National Park.
The Puszatszer Nature Protection Area is
located in that part. Great fishpond system and sodic lakes as well as grasslands
can be found in this part of the National Park.
3. Day: Wednesday
On this day after having breakfast, we
are going to visit the Northern part of the Kiskunsági National Park. We will
explore two sodic lakes (Kelemen-szék, Böddi-szék) and a fish pound system
outside the village of Apaj.
Huge sodic meadows and grazing lands are to be
found in this area.
The largest Hungarian colony of Great Bustards live on
these lands.
4. Day: Thursday
On the fourth day after breakfast,
we travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Hortobágy National Park. This national
Park is in the Eastern part of the country, which was founded in 1973 and it is
the largest continuous natural grassland in Europe.
Hortobágy National Park
has an outstanding variation of wetlands and grazing lands. We will visit
different grasslands, wetlands and fishponds in this area.
5. Day: Friday
It is the last day of our tour.
We will check out the accommodation and I will
take you back to the airport.
