Birdwatching in Kiskunság – May 4, 2025

On May 4, 2025, we went on a one-day birdwatching trip to the Kiskunság National Park. We started the tour from downtown Budapest. The weather was sunny and warm – a perfect spring day for birding.

We began birdwatching near the village of Bugyi, in open agricultural and grassy areas. Here we saw Great Bustards (Otis tarda), European Roller (Coracias garrulus), Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor), Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix), Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus), Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix), and Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops).

Later we visited the wetlands near Apaj. In this area we observed Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina), Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), and White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus).

In total, we recorded 60 bird species during the day. It was a successful and enjoyable birdwatching trip.
